War Memento
Coffee cup in hand, Seaman Recruit Duncan Morgan spied on the waitress at the other side of the small but narrow diner. The queen-bee had the lamp all right, and seeing that Morgan was shipping out the following morning, he was red-hot.
She’d spotted his furtive glances several times and paid the ogles no mind. Duncan assumed she had grown accustomed to the boys parking their pouches her way. After all, the place was right across the departure point, so many of them probably spent their last night casing the joint.
She was a looker, this one. Although slender hips made her appear boyish, up top the torpedoes were ready. But the girl’s greatest gift was the pair of legs hiding under the waitress outfit. Although he could only see her calves most of the time, Duncan knew she had class. Somehow she had obtained a pair of leg-shaping nylons, the black seam on each running up and disappearing behind the dress. Because of the war, the Miracle Fiber was scarce, so the girl was if anything resourceful.
Duncan stiffened as she walked over.
“Coffee?”
“Please.” He tugged at his uniform. “Shipping out tomorrow.”
“Best of luck.”
“Thing is, I ain’t got a girl.”
“And you want my nylons.”
“Please.” Duncan’s face turned bright red. “I ain’t the first one, huh?”
“No. And you ain’t the last.” She leaned into him, hot breath blasting his ear. “Don’t have any on, sailor. Drew the lines with an eyebrow pencil.”
“Well, I’ll be.”
She smiled. “Want to lick them off?”
The following morning, Duncan sat at the station, his hands fiddling with a narrow pencil. A nosy recruit leaned over and inspected the strange writing utensil.
“Never seen one like that before.”
“Too bad,” Duncan said, giving the boy a quick wink.
